A Career Rooted in Education

When Pierce Mortuary Colleges went in search of someone to replace retiring Dallas Institute of Funeral Service President James Shoemake earlier this year, it didn’t have to look far. The perfect person was already on campus. Not only had Wayne Cavender been with the Dallas Institute for 24 years in various instructional and administrative roles, but he was also a graduate of the Dallas-based mortuary school. We recently had the chance to chat with Cavender, who was named president in late March, about his career path, mortuary school education and what the future holds.
